Welcome to the Pompey Music Scene.
These pages feature the best, most exciting and interesting bands to come from the south coast of England.
Portsmouth (or Pompey as it is more affectionately known) is right in the middle of the
south coast of England. It is far enough away from the well known music business centres
like London to be totally ignored by the major record companies. However it does have
a very thriving population of bands, many of whom are better known outside the UK than
they are in Portsmouth. These pages are an attempt to raise the profile of the best of
Portsmouth and the South Coast.
This page is always under construction so check back every few weeks to keep up with what's happening.
The Pompey Band Directory.
I'll be the first to admit that it isn't complete but here is a directory of some of the bands to come out of Pompey over the last few years.
Other highlights of Pompey life include:
New Releases
Watch out for Elastic Fiction and Elastic Fiction - The Caustic Lexicon, two tapes that have been put together by the Pugwash magazine team at Portsmouth University. They will be available
at Pompey gigs and from the bands featured on them. They are
a pretty good introduction to the current Pompey scene. The launch party for Elastic Fiction with Vex, Murmurs Of Irma and Dragontree on the 23rd of May at The Garage, Portsmouth University has been cancelled.
Tony Rollinson has brought out a book called "Twenty Missed Beats - The Portsmouth
Music Scene 1977-1996.
You can order a copy through Mainmast Books, 251 Copnor Road, Portsmouth, Hants, PO3 5EE, UK.
Also check out "Twenty Framed Beats" - a video history of the best of the Pompey Music scene
over the last 20 years and "Fourteen Missed Beats" - a vinyl
companion to the book and the video available from Vendetta Records.
